<< Back to Deja Voodoo: The "X-Stop Files" Revisited
Writing About Sex Isn't Obscene
We found lots of examples of writing about sex which are blocked by X-Stop. No surprise, since it would take an actual review by humans of the content of these sites to determine that they aren't obscene, and there is precious little evidence that Log-On Data, or any other censorware maker for that matter, performs any meaningful review. Perhaps to its credit, X-Stop does not ban the Starr Report, unlike many of its competitors, but there is little else to commend it in this department.
In a tribute to one of the white hat lawyers in the Loudoun County case, who thought that this was perhaps the "best" bad block we gave, we start
with Sex Culture in Ancient China.
"India has the Kama Sutra, but China has a history of uninterrupted study of sex and sexuality that far surpasses that of India. This site explores the history of sexology in China, and presents artefacts to illustrate Chinese attitudes towards sex through its long history, presented by China's foremost renowned sexologist, Professor Liu Dalin."
So why is this site so special? Because it is one of the very few instances of bad blocks revealed by the Loudoun plaintiffs which the library itself, let alone X-Stop, refused to unblock. Look at the site and ask yourself a simple question: if the site was a book, would a general public library refuse to carry it?
And since we're speaking of books, go next to Wicked Pleasures, the website for a book about
African-American sexuality. There's no doubt that the writing is pretty raw in places, but we don't believe that "raw" is a recognized exclusionary criterion. Would you be upset if this book got thrown in the trash by some closed-minded librarian?
But it isn't just serious writing about sex which is banned. Take a look at C-TOONS, a cartoon series with a condom as the main character, intended to reinforce awareness of safe sex practices.
"It's sexy. . . It's cute. . . It's arrogant and rude. . . It's a
humorous attitude."
And it's banned.
Our last selection for this section is Darkwhisper. It's about bdsm, and it has an adult warning,
so it's actually easy to see how a ‘bot would block it. But it is serious text only, not unlike what one can find in many libraries, and it is a good illustration of the lack of any meaningful human review.
