Smartfilter in Utah: Appendix

A listing of many of the URLs found to be wrongfully banned. URLs are listed only once even if they appear in the log files many times; additionally, multiple URLs from the same site have generally been condensed into a single listing (a notable exception is wiretap.spies.com, where each URL represents a completely unique document).

Each URL listed here is listed because someone, somewhere in Utah, was actually banned from accessing it. These are not hypothetical, theoretical, or potential harms. These are real acts of censorship which the State of Utah imposed on its citizens in September-October 1998.

Censoring pages discussing Marxism and the like not only hinders school reports but cuts deeply at the foundations of our political system - the freedom to speak and receive information about politics in all of its forms. Bans on the Starr Report are particularly repugnant - despite its graphic nature, even teenagers have the right (indeed, duty) to participate in the political process. Information about the government should not be censored by any governmental agency, be it library, school, or UEN.

One final note: these lists by no means represent all of the information wrongly banned by the state of Utah. These represent only those which were discovered by Utah citizens during September 10-October 10, 1998. Since even a large population of users wouldn't come close to accessing the entire internet during a single month, this listing represents a small fraction of all of the perfectly legitimate sites which are actually banned but have not, as of yet, been discovered.
